Welcome to the West Kintyre Medical Fund website. We extend a warm welcome to all who have an
interest in healthcare in West Kintyre. As a resident of West Kintyre, you will undoubtedly have benefited from the
excellent care provided by the team at Muasdale Surgery.
Perhaps as a visitor to the area, you have required medical attention on some occasion for whatever reason, and have
appreciated the care and attention you have received. Whatever your reason for logging in…..we welcome you, and invite
you to explore the website further.
The West Kintyre Medical Fund was founded in 2002 by, Dr Norman Gourlay the GP at that time.
The purpose of the Fund is to raise funds to purchase medical equipment for the surgery at Muasdale. Having such equipment
strengthens the case for retaining a surgery and doctor at Muasdale as any equipment purchased by the Fund would then
belong to the local community.
We feel that the quality of care we receive from the Muasdale Surgery is second to none, and we aim to work hand in hand
with Dr Syred and his staff to maintain their important presence in the community, and ensure that the resources both in
people and equipment are safeguarded for the future..
To date we have provided a centrifuge, a colour chart, a diagnostic set, 2 TENS machines various other items, and recently
(with generous funding from the Windfarm Trust and The British Heart Foundation) a defibrillator, which in itself is a life
saving piece of equipment.
In whatever way you can !

We are very pleased to welcome John Fryer, Achnafad, as our new treasurer, and know that he will be kept very busy with all the latest developments. We would like to thank Margit Wylie, who has served as treasurer for quite a few years, and are pleased to say that Margit will remain on the committee.

We have received £395 from the generosity of friends sharing birthday celebrations with Marilyn and Maggie from The Tassie. Guests were asked not to bring presents, but to donate, if they so wished, to two local charities; The Mairi Semple Cancer Fund and The West Kintyre Medical Fund. The amazing total of £790 was donated with both charities receiving £395. Sadly, the other donation was from the retiring offering at Jock Rennie's funeral in Gigha. We are most grateful to the family for considering The Medical Fund in this way and assure them that this wonderful contribution of £591 will be put to good use for equipment for the community. We thank the family and friends of Jock, and extend our deepest sympathy at this time.

This will mean that the Fund will be exempt from tax on many of our medical purchases, which will be a great financial advantage.
We will also be able to invite our supporters and Friends to Gift Aid their contributions, where appropriate, and so will be able to claim back around 30 pence in every pound from the Government.
This is a real achievement, and will benefit the Fund, and so also, the community in a very positive way.

We are really pleased to inform you that, because of the generosity of many of you, we are able to provide some valuable new equipment for the Surgery at Muasdale, and for use on Gigha.
At our meeting on August 31st, a decision was made to purchase 3 items, and you can read more about that on "the extended news" section below.

The three items are as follows :
1. An electronic ear syringe. The present one is beyond repair, so this will be a very welcome replacement, making life easier for both nurse and patient !
2. A Spirometer. This device measures air inspired and expired, and is a very important diagnostic tool for use with patients with chronic obstructive airway disease, patients with asthma, and those with any other breathing problems.
The advantages of this particular model is that it is portable and lightweight. This
obviously makes it easier for the doctor to transport, and also is easier for children and the elderly to use.
3. A Pulse Oximeter for Gigha. This gives an indication of the patient's cardio-respiratory status by simply attaching the device to a finger.
We are also grateful to Marion Shedden from The Tassie for a very generous donation to the Surgery of a new wheelchair, which will be avaliable for anyone who has need of this.
These items will be of great value to the Surgery and the community.
These items will cost around £1900 in total, and the provision of such is solely by the generosity of The Friends of West Kintyre.
